DENVER – For the fourth consecutive meetings between Denver and Rapid City, the teams needed a shootout to decide the outcome. And, for the third straight time, the Cutthroats defeated the Rush, this time by a score of 3-2.
The Fish scored on 3-of-4 attempts in the shootout, including Brad Smyth's game-winner, and stopped all three Rush shooters. With the victory, Denver (14-8-1) moved into a tie for second place in the standings with Allen.
J.P. Chabot opened the scoring in the first period, with assists coming from Mario Boilard and Joel Chouinard.
The Rush (11-7-5) scored the next two goals in the second, coming off the sticks of Scott Brannon and Travis Llewellyn. Brannon's goal came on the power play.
Luke Fulghum netted his own power play marker, tying the game at two towards the end of the second.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the game went to a shootout. Cutthroats goalie Kieran Millan stepped up, making three shootout saves and 25 during the rest of the game to earn his seventh win.
The Fish are at it again Friday in a home bout against the Allen Americans.
