CHARLOTTE – In a battle of Western Conference opponents, it was the Lake Erie Monsters won got past Charlotte 3-2 on a third-period goal by Bill Thomas.
Thomas scored midway through the last frame on a feed from David van der Gulik to put the Monsters (12-9-1-1) ahead for good. Mike Connolly netted the first goal for Lake Erie in the first on the power play from Geoff Walker. Michael Sgarbossa added the other goal. Sami Aittokallio stopped 28 shots to earn his seventh win of the season.
Jerome Samson and Drayson Bowman got the goals for the Checkers (12-8-0-2), who remained in second place in the Western conference. Justin Peters made 21 saves in the loss.
Same two teams are at it again at the Time Warner Cable Arena Friday.
