Colorado Avalanche Greats by the Numbers: 40 Through 49

Here is fifth installment in the series, Colorado Avalanche greatest players by jersey number: 40 through 49. Click here for part four.

40: Alex Tanguay (1999-2006) has his number 18 retired for the Halifax Mooseheads. He scored at least one point in his first five games as a rookie, including his first career goal against Pittsburgh's Peter Skudra. Famously, he netted two goals, including the Cup clincher, against the New Jersey Devils in 2001. During the 2002-03 season, he was almost traded with Martin Skoula to Boston for Martin Lapointe and Kyle McLaren. Stats: 450 GP, 137-263-400, +121, 219 PIMS.

41: Martin Skoula (1999-2004) was an unsung hero during the 2001 Cup run for the Avs. He played in all 23 games, scoring his lone playoff goal against Martin Brodeur in game three of the finals. He also wore the number 55 during his rookie season. Stats: 383 GP, 27-86-113, +23, 198 PIMS.

42: Chris Stewart (2008-11), probably best known for wearing 25, had two hat tricks and two Gordie Howe hat tricks during his time in Colorado. His best season for the Avalanche was in 2009-10, when he scored 28 goals and totaled 64 points. He added three goals in the playoffs that year against San Jose. Stats: 166 GP, 52-61-113, -24, 165 PIMS.

43: Cameron Gaunce (2010-Current) was drafted 50th overall in the 2008 draft. He scored his lone NHL goal to this point on Marc-Andre Fleury and the PIttsburgh Penguins Feb. 16, 2011. He is one of the Avs top defenseman prospects, he could see some playing time in the NHL once the lockout is over. Stats: 11 GP, 1-0-1, -3, 16 PIMS.

44: Ryan Wilson (2009-Current) after being undrafted out of the OHL, he was acquired from Calgary with Lawrence Nycholat for Jordan Leopold in 2009. He has quickly turned into a top four defenseman and an aggressive open ice hitter. Just look up his name on Youtube, and watch one of his menacing hits.. Stats: 187 GP, 7-51-58, +16, 137 PIMS.

45: Chris Durno (2009-10) was another undrafted player the Avs found. After bouncing around the AHL, Colorado signed him in 2008. He scored his first NHL goal against Alex Auld and the Dallas Stars in a 4-1 victory. Before playing hockey, he was drafted by the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League in 2001. Stats: 43 GP, 4-4-8, +3, 47 PIMS.

46: Stefan Elliott (2011-Current), like Gaunce, is a highly-touted prospect that is a defenseman. He lit up the WHL to a tune of 31 goals and 81 points in his last season. His first NHL goal came against Edmonton and Devan Dubnyk, which also was the game winner. Stats: 39 GP, 4-9-13, +2, 8 PIMS.

47: Ray Macias (2009-11) was the 124th pick in the 2005 draft. He is fourth all-time in games played with Lake Erie at 183 games. Currently, he is in Germany playing for Schwenninger Wild Wings. Stats: 8 GP, 0-1-1, -1, 2 PIMS.

48: Scott Young (1995-97) was the fifth leading scorer for Colorado in 1995-96, with 60 points. It was his second Stanley Cup ring, winning his first with Pittsburgh in 1991. He scored his first NHL goal on Patrick Roy with the Hartford Whalers. Stats: 153 GP, 39-58-97, -3, 64 PIMS.

49: Serge Aubin (1998-2000, 02-03) was an AHL all-star as a member of the Hershey Bears, Colorado's affiliate at the time, in 2000. He also wore numbers 10 and 44 during his two separate stints. Stats: 82 GP, 6-7-13, -1, 70 PIMS.
