One of the biggest surprises so far this season in the KHL has been the resurgence of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl after the tragic plane accident last September. A huge part of their success has been Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov.
Since signing with his former junior club on Sept. 27, he is 7-2-0, 1.94 goals against average and .942 save percentage. His best outing was a 24-save shutout on Oct. 27 against Severstal Cherepovets. Varly also shined best in shootouts, going 3-0 and saving all nine shots he has faced. Lokomotiv does not play again until Nov. 14, when they host Zdeno Chara and HC Slovan Bratislava.
The big question will be can Varlamov keep his success going when the lockout is lifted? For Avalanche fans, hopefully, the answer will be yes.
General manager Greg Sherman spent a first- and a second-round pick on the young netminder, hoping he can be the goaltender to lead the Avs back to the promised land. Many believe Varlamov can be that guy, as long as he stays healthy and learns the tricks of the trade by watching Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
Avalanche 101 will keep a close eye on Varlamov's stellar play, whether he be in the KHL or NHL.
